When we embarked on our vanlife journey, our dog Chloe was our main motivation. We initially dreamed of traveling internationally, but the logistics of traveling with your dog can be daunting and expensive. So, we set our sights on a different adventure: converting a cargo van into an off-grid home on wheels, allowing us to explore the beauty of the United States and beyond while giving Chloe the best life possible.

Plan Frequent Stops for Your Pet’s Comfort

  • Long driving days can be exhausting for both you and your pet.
  • Frequent stops for bathroom breaks, stretching, and playtime help reduce stress.
  • Ensure your pet stays hydrated, especially during extended drives.

Navigate Pet Restrictions in National Parks

  • Many national parks limit pets to parking lots, making exploration challenging.
  • Sometimes, we had to skip activities because we couldn’t bring Chloe or didn’t want to leave her alone so don’t feel bad if you opt out of something because chances are you will be back someday.
  • Safety is key, so evaluate your comfort level when leaving your pet in the van. We always say that the van is replaceable but Chloe isn’t so if you feel even slightly off it may not be worth the risk.

Maintain a Comfortable Temperature in Your Van

  • Be prepared to regulate the van’s temperature when your pet can’t join you.
  • Invest in window covers, insulation, a Maxxair fan, AC, and an Espar Heater (for cold weather).
  • Consider temperature-monitoring devices like SimpliSafe or Waggle. These can allow you to keep an eye on the temperature in your van and can even send you alerts when it gets over the temperature you set.

Enhance Security with Cameras and Alarms

  • A security system with cameras can provide peace of mind when leaving your pet in the van.
  • Ensure you have reliable internet access in your van, possibly through Starlink or mobile hotspots.
  • SimpliSafe offers a versatile security system for van life, including cameras, sensors, and alarms.

Small Space, Big Comfort for Your Pet

  • Create a cozy environment for your pet with toys and treats.
  • Make them feel at home in the van, reinforcing that it’s a safe and comfortable space. We love that Chloe knows the van as her home. She has never been hesitant to come in the van because we make sure she is comfortable and gets plenty of activity outside of the van.

Stay Vigilant for Wildlife and Hazards

  • When playing outside, be cautious of local wildlife, such as snakes, bears, and mountain lions. Even plants can be dangerous, Chloe seems to be way too curious about every cactus she sees, so make sure they can’t touch something that could cause them harm.
  • Keep your pet on a leash and watch out for what’s underneath the van, where animals might seek warmth. We read once that snakes often seek laying underneath vehicles, so ever since we make sure to look underneath before stepping out of the van.

Maintain Vaccinations and Medications

  • Keep your pet up to date on vaccinations and preventative medications. This is much easier and nice to have the peace of mind that they are taken care of.
  • Stock up on flea/tick and heartworm medicine for the duration of your journey.
  • Protection is crucial, given the variety of environments your pet will encounter.

Traveling with your dog in a van can be a rewarding and adventurous experience, but it comes with unique challenges. By planning carefully, prioritizing your pet’s safety and comfort, and staying informed about pet-friendly options at your destinations, you can ensure that your furry friend enjoys the vanlife journey just as much as you do. Chloe’s happy tail-wags are a testament to the incredible bond that can be formed while exploring the open road together.
